St. John the Baptist School is growing . . .

Announcing the addition of
6th Grade!
Beginning fall 2012

St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Vermillion will add a sixth grade in the fall of 2012. In addition to a curriculum that is integrated with the Hastings School District, the 6th grade program will include a focus on leadership and service. A priority for our school is to ensure that our 5th and 6th grades are not "bottom of the totem pole" experiences, which are common during the transition to middle school. Instead, we want to create two additional years of faith fortification, confidence and leadership-building experiences, and service-oriented contributions to our community.

  • Multiage, unified 5th & 6th grade neighborhood classroom where student ability is assessed more frequently and instruction is provided at their level. In large groups (example: social studies, art), small groups (reading and math) and individually. The classroom operates on a two-year curriculum cycle, in which all students study the same thematic matter at varying academic levels.

  • Additional part-time tachers hired in addition to Sister Tresa teaching religion.

  • Classroom space enlarged to include existing lab area, plus break-out/learning station setup in Music Room, and use of Conference Room as needed.

  • Math: Grouped by student ability (5th grade, 6th grade and beyond).

  • Science: Physical and natural rotation, in addition to lab coursework.

  • Leadership: Participation in a speech and debate program, a Student Council or Student Advisory Board, service project leadership roles, and an advanced Audubon environmental leadership experience.

  • Music: Music history and world composers, instruments and reading music and performance choir.

  • Reading, Language Arts, Poetry and Literature.

  • Leading in faith: Annual 6th grade retreat day, youth ministry experiences and continued daily religion.

  • Technology: Continued integration of technology use and understanding in classroom.

  • Social Studies, possibly including Junior Achievement "Biz Town" consumer science experience.

  • Art and physical education continue at next level.
