Students from St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Vermillion returned from the May 1, 2010, Regional Science & Engineering Science Fair with many awards.
The annual event, held at the Minnesota State University-Mankato campus, is one of the largest regional science and engineering fairs in the United States, with schools from more than 38 Minnesota communities competing. St. John the Baptist winners from their local school science fair in March advanced to regional competition against 475 other student projects in Grades 3 through 5. Student projects run the entire gamut of science exploration - - Animal Sciences, Behavior & Social Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Earth Science, Energy & Transportation, Environmental Sciences, Family Consumer Science, Health Sciences & Human Performance, Microbiology, Physical Science and Plant Sciences.
St. John the Baptist winners were:
5th Grade: Madisen Leifeld - Purple Ribbon & Book Award for "Bubble Up", Lauren Oberg - Purple Ribbon & 2nd Place medal for "Preserving Memories", Delanie Otto - Blue Ribbon & Book Award for "Soak It Up",
4th Grade: Katie Boyd - Blue Ribbon & Book Award for "What's the Weather", Nate Clemens - Blue Ribbon & Book Award for "Natural Colors", Elsie Kopp - Purple Ribbon & 3rd Place medal for "Fading Paper",
3rd Grade: Elizabeth Barker - Purple Ribbon & Book Award for "Soccer Kick", Jacob Biermaier - Red Ribbon & Book Award for "Apples to Apples", Stephanie Braun - Purple Ribbon & Book Award for "Bubble Heads", Grace Boyd - Blue Ribbon & Book Award for "Seedlings and Dishwater", Alayna Kasel - Purple Ribbon & Book Award for "Can you Crack Them?" Mason Murphy - Purple Ribbon & 2nd Place medal for "Fly Airplane Fly."
